Calculator FAQ

What is my "FIRE number"?
Your FIRE number is the total portfolio value needed to retire. It's calculated as your annual expenses ÷ your withdrawal rate. At a 4% withdrawal rate, that's your annual expenses × 25. Learn more about the 4% rule.
What return rate should I use?
The U.S. stock market has returned approximately 10% nominally and 7% inflation-adjusted over the long term. For conservative planning, use 6–7%. For aggressive scenarios, use 8–9%. We recommend 7% as the baseline.
What's the difference between FIRE number and Coast FIRE number?
Your FIRE number is the amount needed to retire today. Your Coast FIRE number is the amount needed now so that compounding growth alone will reach your full FIRE number by traditional retirement age. See FIRE variants explained.
Which accounts should I use to reach my FIRE number?
Maximize tax-advantaged accounts first (401k match → HSA → Roth IRA → remaining 401k), then taxable brokerage. The accounts guide explains exactly which order to fill and how to access funds before age 59½.
What if my expenses will be lower in retirement?
Enter your expected retirement expenses (not current expenses) in the calculator. Many FIRE retirees spend less in retirement — no commuting, no work wardrobe, lower taxes on investment income, potentially a paid-off home.
